The inspiration behind the song came from a tragic event that occurred on January 29, 1979, in San Diego, California. A 16-year-old girl named Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire on the Grover Cleveland Elementary School across the street from her house, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. When asked by a reporter why she did it, she replied, "I don't like Mondays." Her response became the basis for Geldof's song.
